5 Best Vintage Shops in Shimokitazawa

“Fashion is ephemeral. Art is eternal. Indeed what is a fashion really? A fashion is merely a form of ugliness so absolutely unbearable that we have to alter it every six months!”

– Oscar Wilde

ilde’s advice to fashion. Our appetite for fashion is a cycle. One moment being tasteful until we decide to throw it away in disdain only for it to reappear years later relabelled as being “vintage.” However, there is something to the game of “thrifting” any seasoned thrifter will tell you and that is thrift store shopping is a sport.

A great second-hand find is like a diamond in the rough.

Oh yes, we all love unique fashion and vintage designer clothes for a steal but the woes of finding “something” in “everything” is the real challenge.

Once you head dive through the unruly piles of discarded clothes, you’ll convince yourself over and over again it’s definitely “granny-chic” not “granny-made” 20 times more before you even make your way to the register.

So how can we simplify the plethora of choices to avoid the deal-breakers and head towards the deal-makers?

Well, let’s start small.

We have done some awesome vintage-inspired fashion monthly looks (FML) over the years so if you like our style here at The Hidden Thimble, or want a simple style hunters guide to the thrift store maze of Shimokitazawa, here are my top 5 places to start you on your shopping journey.

North Exit Shop Guide

Toyo Hyakatten Shimokita Garage Department Store

A well organised bazaar space with many small stores. The style of each shop ranges from steam punk watches, ethnic accessories, nail and henna tattoo services to a collab rental space for various independent makers to sell their handmade accessories, jewellery as well as small artworks. There are also shops that open only for fashion workshops and courses. Even if you walk out empty handed, you’ll have a

lot of fun walking around looking at everything this place has to offer.

LANP by VALON

A second hand vintage shop catering for both men and women, this store sources its clothing and antiques from mainly America all which are dated somewhere during the early 20th century. It’s a lovely curated collection with a more chic modern adult vibe. You can also find some designer brands that have been carefully selected as well as antique decorations.

Nicoro Polo (Marco Polo)

Next to LANP BY VALON and part of the bigger MARCO POLO thrift chain store, NICORO POLO stocks a very nice (but smaller) collection of female second hand clothes that are preppy, romantic and sweet in style. You might also get lucky and find a designer brand here and there in the same style to complete your cute coordination. Their Instagram is a great way to see how they pair their clothes to

show the style and type of vintage clothing they stock.

Grown Up Tabatha

Strictly not “vintage” but worth a visit, one of the most iconic stores in the area Tabatha is a handmade hat and bag store and interestingly, also sells Supreme-like “Shimokita” merchandise which is great for a souvenir gag or just because you love the area so much! They make all styles of modern to traditional hats from everyday caps to more specific styles like tam hats.

From dainty Peter Pan collar blouses to 90’s inspired plaid pleated skirts, Mocha caters to fashion seekers who are familiar with Harajuku’s youth style mixed with Shimokita’s uniqueness in prints and embellishments. Greatly Terrific Food Outing: Waffle cafe ORANGE

OVERALL SUMMARY

Good for a light meal but underwhelming for waffle lovers.

An off the beaten track waffle house cafe where you can celebrate and feast on waffles with not only a variety of toppings but waffle flavours as well? Hello! From savoury to sweet we all know waffles are the all day champion that can be not so breakfast and also not so dessert, but can this menu satisfy your all-day breakfast hunger needs? Playing Russian Roulette with sweet and salty, we find out what Orange Waffle Cafe is all about!

SETTING AND ATMOSPHERE

eing situated in the unique neighbourhood of Shimokitazawa known for its alternative vibe and interesting approach to shop fronts, Orange Waffle Cafe is a very cute homestyle cafe with two outdoor porches to sit and dine – a unique feature and a little rare to see in urban Tokyo.

The wooden elements mixed with modern mosaic tiles and worn out concrete flooring makes it a cosy and relaxing spot to sit down after shopping. Although the interior is quite simple, it’s the attention to detail in the small decor choices and

serving plates that make it cosy and welcoming in that kitsch zakka way.

The busy time trends to be after 1PM with the crowds still hanging around until 4PM for tea which changes the tempo of the cafe from being one moment quiet to the next lively. Nevertheless, if you are in a group with less than four people, you can definitely find a spot to sit during the busy times and not feel like you’ll have to leave soon to make room for the next awaiting party to eat, giving you more time to admire the street view at your own pace.

Food

s you might have guessed, the king of their dishes is the humble waffle. I was surprised that their menu not only offers a variety of toppings but a variety of waffle flavours as well. I enjoyed looking at the variety of their waffle bases from red velvet, cheddar cheese, chia seeds and more. Unfortunately, there was no option to switch a flavour from a plain to a flavoured waffle should you want to upgrade your meal to something more special and unique.

Tasting both savoury and sweet dishes, the waffles are always light with a crispy outside. If you are familiar with the Belgian waffle’s dense cake quality, the waffles at Orange Waffle Cafe are disappointingly not that kind. Though one could argue that a cake-ish texture and taste could affect the flavour of the savoury food, I argue that it would actually help the taste factor of the dishes as the waffle batter did not taste like anything but a generic bland “carb” taste.

Let’s start with the savoury dish: the slightly misleading “Vegetable” waffle. Topped with a sunny fried egg and bacon slices drizzled with herb cream cheese sauce, the “vegetable” in the title refers to the waffle’s flavour being made of spinach and corn and not for being vegetarian friendly.

Unfortunately, tasting the “spinach” or “corn” in these waffles was non-exist and though the spinach waffle was coloured green when cut with a knife, there was no distinct taste or food texture of the base ingredient even in the corn version. The egg and bacon was tasty with the waffle combination, though it felt a bit strange to eat my carottes râpées and salad with my maple syrup covered mixed herb sauce savoury waffle.

My thoughts were that this dish was supposed to be a twist on Eggs Benedict but it kind of missed the mark by doing too much.

For dessert, the “Cinnamon Sugar and Butter” waffle caught my eye but I decided to level up with a side order of vanilla ice cream because, why not right? Sometimes the simple things in life are the best and the thought of cinnamon sugar toast but in waffle form was an enticing idea. Yet, as with the “Vegetable,” the title of this one is also a bit misleading for people who are use to western food culture.

Let’s start off with the cinnamon sugar, a mixture traditionally made of ground cinnamon and granulated sugar sprinkled on dessert for that sweet kick with a bit of crunch as it caramelises from the heat of your warm carb of choice toasted together. At Orange Waffle Cafe, “cinnamon sugar” is simply cinnamon powder dusted on the waffle with icing sugar sprinkled on top tasting more like a decoration to keep the waffle from looking plain than a flavour. The fact that the cinnamon sugar didn’t melt into the waffle even with the butter to give it some sort of flavour element made it super dry eaten alone. The whipped butter was its only saving grace with the vanilla ice cream only being enough for one waffle in the end. Thank god for the jug of syrup so I could sugar overdose this dish to life again.

To summarise, the food at Orange Waffle Cafe will leave one underwhelmed by what could have been potentially a great tasting menu. I personally thought the creativity and idea behind the menu was fantastic with so much potential but it was let down by simply not enough finessing in the recipe department.

Service

aving both a half counter service for take-out and semi-full service when eating in, the service at Orange Waffle Cafe was very prompt and the staff are very attentive even when busy, continually checking to fill your water or knowing who hasn’t ordered yet.

Though the English level may vary from staff members, the menu has full English translations to aid in ordering should you feel worried about your Japanese communication skills.

Value for Money

hough waffle dishes will not exceed over 1500 yen (add another 320 yen for the drink set) the price point seems a bit overpriced for what you really get to eat. As the dishes are quite light on toppings, I left feeling like I had eaten a light sandwich than a proper waffle meal.

The drink set menu was definitely a deal and is very different from what I usually see offered at most cafes. It boasts quite a large range of a variety of drinks from coffees, teas, original soft drinks, juices, and even beer.

Greatly Terrific Food Outing: Kawaii Monster Cafe Harajuku

OVERALL SUMMARY

Not just Insta-worthy – it’s tasty as well!

With its dripping liquid walls and psychedelic colour scheme, The KAWAII MONSTER CAFE plays perfect homage to the flamboyant, the sweetest of sugary treats and the oh-so fun nature that is the Harajuku district and the signature world that is the creative mind of Sebastian Masuda. Don’t expect a simple dine-out experience here! As the “Monster Girls” navigate you to your table, let’s see what this Alice in Wonderland has to offer.

Setting and Atmosphere

ver the top and sinfully fun. The interior of the KAWAII MONSTER CAFE feels like a shrine to Harajuku’s crazy and excessive nature in fashion and style, but what if I told you it was actually the stomach of the restaurant’s mascot, “Mr. Ten thousand chopsticks” or simply “Choppy” for short? Bet you would have never guessed, right?

Before entering the discotheque labyrinth that is this monster’s “belly,” you have a selection of 4 rooms or “zones” to choose from: MUSHROOM DISCO, MILK STAND, Bar

Experiment, and Mel-Tea ROOM. Since I arrived pretty late that night the MUSHROOM DISCO zone was only available but turned out to be a blessing in disguise since it was right in the middle near the restaurant’s most entertaining features: the “SWEETS GO ROUND” carousel and the area where the DJ was playing.

Each zone’s aesthetic matched well to its theme with plenty of photo opportunities for patrons to freely enjoy taking photos but the details don’t just stop there. The restrooms were also worth a photo visit too! Check out the photos:

Food

dmittedly, I must confess that when I saw the food menu my first thought was, “Is this really gonna taste good or be some kind of mediocre mush?” because the food seriously looked like it came from a Play-Doh set rather than something you should eat and put in your mouth. But oh, how wrong I was!

The first dish was the “Painter” version of their Colorful Rainbow Pasta dish and the dish does live up to its name. The rainbow spaghetti arrived on a painter palette shaped dish with the “paint” being an assortment of different sauces to cover your spaghetti in.

What amazed me the most was that each sauce had its own unique flavour from basil pesto to a garlic kind, offering many different taste variations to choose from. The garlic sauce was bomb and was my favourite!

The final dish I ordered was called the “TOKYO fusion style MEAT MEAT MEAT,” and it was literally a meat bag – a variety of different meats of your choice tossed in a sauce and mixed in a big ass bag for your inner carnivore. The meat was well-cooked to juicy perfection in the Cajun sauce but it also came with an assortment of side sauces to level up your taste buds. Life is too short to have just one sauce – variety is the spice of life!

Service

lthough the main icon girls “BABY”, “DOLLY”, “CANDY”, “NASTY” and “CRAZY” weren’t there when I went, the usual staff were also very nice and always smiling.

Super cheery and English friendly, the staff or “Monster Girls” really do enjoy helping you out with taking photos etc. It can’t be easy to try and take orders over loud music but they were super prompt and efficient.

Value for Money

eing a themed restaurant, you kind of have to compare this dining experience like going to an amusement park as most theme restaurants do require some kind of entry fee.

At KAWAII MONSTER CAFE it’s called a “Zone Charge” which is 500 yen per person (as of 2016).  However, you do get a small free gift after your meal as a souvenir which I

think is a nice gesture (mine was a pair of chopsticks with my country’s flag printed).

Though it might not be a place you would go every weekend night, the price of the main dishes were reasonable for their volume and quality and would be a good choice for a fun night out or the occasional extravagant dinner experience.

Sailor Moon Exhibition and Cafe

By the Power of the Moon, I will Punish you!

She may not be a Disney Princess by title, but Sailor Moon’s charm has captured every girls’ dream of becoming fairy-tale royalty with the added badassery of fighting in the name of love and justice, all by the magical hour of moonlight of course.

I can’t believe it’s been more than 20 years since the series was released and to celebrate, Roppongi’s Mori Art Museum held a special themed exhibition to honour the work and success of our favourite teenage supernatural crime-fighting squad in style.

The exhibition featured everything you could have imagined that was the 90’s golden age of the series, from television magazine cover appearances to replica wand and compact toys, this exhibition was gauged towards those who grew up with the original Sailor Moon television show rather anything from with the recent reboot Crystal series (a blessing in disguise for traditionalists).

I have heard many good things about the famed Roppongi Mori Art Museum and it goes without saying that it is one of the best places for exhibits ranging from works by famed artists like Takashi Murakami to even pop culture manga like Naruto, they hold something for everyone!

Being the artistic creation of mangaka Naoko Takeuchi, the art show not only showcased original artworks used in the original anime and manga, but also some new works made especially for this Sailor Moon exhibition. Unfortunately, the artworks were camera restricted but the exhibition featured a few photo spot opportunities just to live out your girlish dreams to strike a pose or two.

Another attraction is the Chibiusa Cafe, the theme cafe where the food is based on the characters from the series! Awesome! But not as awesome as this bomb view we managed to snag right in front of Tokyo Tower!

Totally worth the hour-long wait to manage such a perfect view. While waiting, the front of the cafe displayed the dishes available to choose from just to make you that much hungrier as you wait your turn.

We decided upon the Sailor Senshi Beauty Juices themed as either, Sailor Moon (Calpis), Sailor Mercury (Tonic Water), Sailor Mars (Grapefruit), Sailor Jupiter (Ginger Ale) and Sailor Venus (Orange). We ended up with two Sailor Mars and one Sailor Jupiter and they were delish despite what the crazy colour may suggest.

Processed with VSCO with c1 preset

Being a party of three, we were able to sample all three mains available on the menu. The first was the Sailor Moon Special Hamburger with star-shaped tater tots.

Processed with VSCO with c1 preset

Isn’t it so cute?! The pink bun was shaped to look like the first brooch Sailor Moon received in the series. Unfortunately, the taste was just average for this one.

Processed with VSCO with c1 preset

I ordered the Three-Variety Talisman Curry based on my favourite, the Outer Senshi (Uranus, Neptune and Pluto). I wasn’t expecting too much from this dish but, wow! Can we take a moment to appreciate the detail of their eatable weapons? It tasted just as great as it looked! The curries were a yellow, spinach, and squid ink roux mixture and each had its own distinct taste from mild to spicy.

Processed with VSCO with c1 preset

The final main was the Tuxedo Mask’s Nihilistic Pasta featuring a pie-crust mask and spicy tomato sauce. It was refreshing to see a vegetarian option on the menu and the added rose petals made it look extra fancy.

While the other’s opted for the jelly Heavenly Miracle Romance Parfait, I just had to get this Luna P Ball Berry Mousse for dessert and yes, it was deliciously good.

Finding Animal Doughnuts in Japan for Neko no Hi!

DSCF5778

A Day for Cats?!

It always surprises me how the Japanese phonetic and kanji writing system can be bent in some unusual yet cool ways that it makes, in my opinion, one of the most interesting and most enjoyable languages to learn!

So far I was able to enjoy the hidden meaning behind 11.11 (Pocky Day because of the way the chocolate sticks and date look like || ) and 01.05 (Strawberry Day because the sound “Ichi” for “One” and “Go” for “Five” also can be used to say “Ichigo” which is “Strawberry”), but little did I know that the 22nd of February was Neko no Hi (Cat Day) in Japan! Why you may ask?

It’s because the number “Two” is pronounced “Ni” in Japanese and because the 22nd of February can be written as “222,” the Japan Pet Food Association in 1987 decided to call this day “Cats Day” because the day can be read as “Nyan Nyan Nyan”  or “Meow Meow Meow,” just the way a cat sounds! Cute right?

(It’s also Ninja Day on the 22nd as well WTF?!)

To mark the day I ventured to Jiyuugaoka again in search of the instafamous “animal doughnuts,” which was as you may have guessed,  doughnuts that are shaped into cute animal faces. And no unfortunately, you cannot find these at just any doughnut shop like Mister Doughnuts or Krispy Kreme. I’ve been dying to try one since appearing on our instafeed almost two years ago and now, the wait is over!

If you ever stumble to Jiyuugaoka, I highly recommend a stop over to La Vita at the top of the hill from the north exit of the station as well. When can you go from traditional Japan…

DSCF5749

… to a Venice canal just around the corner?!

DSCF5738

DSCF5742

DSCF5743

DSCF5744

DSCF5747

Ok so it might be a bit small to be a “real” canal but it’s such a pretty little place to just sit and enjoy the scene. Be sure to bring a camera at night as well as it’s also lit up!

Back to the subject of these doughnuts, where did I end up finding them?

Just near the station’s north exit gate is a shop called Izumi Mama’s Animal Doughnuts, a franchise chain that creates these cute creations!

DSCF5751

DSCF5752-3

Adorbs overload! Look at their winky expressions and cute ears! As you place your order, the staff will also let you pick which face you want to eat your favourite kaomojis/emoticons (>.<)!

With so many types to choose from, I decided on MiKe (cat) and Usagi-chan (rabbit). Unfortunately the lady before me took like 4 of the MiKe cat doughnuts including the last winky face one so I chose the sleepy face instead.

DSCF5755-3

DSCF5756-3

DSCF5770

DSCF5773-3

So we all know how cute it looks but what about the taste?

Unfortunately taste wise, it was a bit dry and didn’t have that “cake” spongey or cake taste to it. It was more like a bread texture but thank god for coffee to save the day. I was hoping that the rabbit one would be strawberry flavoured since it had that kind of look to it but it had the same normal base as the cat doughnut. Sad face :(

FYI, the little ears of the cats are almonds so nut allergic peeps beware!

In any case, it was a good experience trying these little animal doughnuts out after two years of waiting!

V-Day Girl’s Day at the Alice in Wonderland Restaurant, Shibuya

You’re Late for Tea!

It seems that Valentine’s Day is a bit upside down here in Japan.

Rather than being all about the girls (let’s be honest), here, all the chocolate and hearts go to the fellows. If you happened to have walked around Shibuya on Sunday you might have spotted some lone hearted guys holding signs saying “Free Hugs” and “Chocolate please.”

Being in single town myself, I turned V Day into Galentine’s Day and went to the Alice in Wonderland theme restaurant for a girl’s day out. Girl Parties or 女子会/joshikai in Japanese is a pretty popular social gathering activity for gal pals here in Japan with hotels and venue restaurants offering lunch, dinner or dessert courses for some Sex and the City female bonding. But don’t worry boys! You have your own 男子会/danshikai version as well here!

Technically this restaurant chain is called Alice’s Fantasy Restaurant and each location has its own “version” on the Alice in Wonderland theme eg. Alice in a Labyrinth, Alice in a Fantasy Book and so on. The one in Shibuya is called Alice in a Dancing Land – 舞踏の国のアリス – and has a cute as hell carousel right in the middle of the restaurant where you can sit surrounded by lights and porcelain ornaments with a giant chandelier dangling from the center.

Pretty right?! Everywhere you looked each ceiling panel or even the fabric used for the chairs remind you of a character or page from Alice in Wonderland. Even the floor staff waitresses wore Alice’s signature blue dress with at least one girl wearing bunny ears for the March Hare and the waiter at the front wore an outfit similar to the Mad Hatter. Unfortunately, I wasn’t able to take any photos of the staff but if you visit their Facebook page, you can see some photos of their staff :D

But I digress, to the food!

To mark the special day the restaurant offered a special event course at ¥2500 (roughly $25) per person which includes 2x entrees, 2x mains, and dessert. Considering it was also an all-you-can-drink with unlimited juice, coffee and tea it was a great price!

Processed with VSCOcam with c1 preset

Processed with VSCOcam with c1 preset

Look at all these tea types! I tried to make it my personal mission to drink each and every one of these tea flavours but could only drink three: maple, chocolate, and grape kyoho black tea.  Although at a lot of places these types of layouts usually mean lackluster and bad quality teas, all the ones I tasted were really delicious and tasted exactly as they said. I especially liked the maple flavoured tea!

Processed with VSCOcam with c1 preset

The first course was a small amuse-bouche which was I believe some kind of cream cheese spread with “rose” shaped smoked ham and toast.

The waitress explained that the dish represented the scene where Alice finds the “eat me” cookies.

Processed with VSCOcam with c1 preset

The next dish was a salad with a cute avocado face for the Caterpillar in his “garden” which was a Caesar Salad.

Processed with VSCOcam with c1 preset

On to mains, the first was a pasta dish with a simple tomato style sauce with cute mozzarella cheese cut into a spade, club, diamond, and heart. The second was a consommé/nabe style soup filled with veggies, chicken, and sausage with some tasty bread and mustard for the sausage. I love the clock plate for the soup! It’s unfortunate that this restaurant doesn’t have a gift shop on site to buy souvenirs as I’m sure there will be many people who would love to buy some of the items here.

Processed with VSCOcam with c1 preset

Processed with VSCOcam with c1 preset

Finally, the last dish was these cute blueberry mousse tarts desserts shaped like bunnies! The taste was quite interesting as it was sweet but also a bit tart, I liked it a lot!

One of the girls has food allergies and we were unsure if she could eat the planned dessert so she ordered the Cheshire Cat Parfait off the menu which was equally adorable!

Processed with VSCOcam with c1 preset

Processed with VSCOcam with c1 preset

Processed with VSCOcam with c1 preset

The main menu at this Alice in Wonderland is actually different from the food we ate off the planned course meal but the food quality was quite nice and somewhat affordable. I believe there is an entry fee of ¥500 or so which was included in our course price. If you do decide to come I recommend coming a bit earlier for lunch as the place can be quite busy but if you come after the rush hour after 2 PM, you’ll find it’s a bit quieter and you might get a better seat.

I definitely recommend coming here if you want to have a unique experience with your friends for afternoon tea.
