OVERALL SUMMARY

Cool, but not *that* cool

“It delivers an instant cooling effect for tired skin in hot summer to lower the temperature of your skin as well as our earth.”

Summer is well in effect here in Tokyo and to escape the heat, I thought I would road test one of the most interesting beauty products I’ve seen so far: the Innisfree Eco Ice Cotton Toner.

With a tagline that promises not only to cool you down in summer but also being environmentally friendly, I ask, what magic does putting on this toner aid in lowering the temperature of our earth exactly?

Innisfree, priding itself as a natural environmentally-friendly brand hopes the introduction of these products will help reduce the use of air conditioners during the simmering summer months. While I am a bit pessimistic at the bold claim to stay cool on a searing 40 degree, high humidity day without a need for a fan or air-con for sweet relief, I can relate to the satisfying feeling of getting rid of the day’s grime with a cooling toner. Let’s find out how effective this product really is…

Application

hen dispensing the product, I was surprised at what came out!

The product inside was a spongy, silly string like foam that was soaked in a bubbly water-based toner for easy direct use.

After shaking the can well, you spray a small amount into your hand to create a cotton ball shape and massage it into your skin. True to word, it was very cool to the

touch and really moist, I was seriously impressed!

The design of this silly string formula is also very smart as it replaces the need for cotton pads when using. The sponge-like foam can be stretched and pulled without breakage and a good squirt of this foam goes a long way as it holds quite a lot of toner product. As an added plus, it’s a hell lot of fun to play with when molding it with your fingertips!

Skin Benefits and Effects

he Innisfree Eco Ice Cotton Toner is said to hydrate, smooth, and tighten pores while improving the appearance of tired-looking skin caused by excessive heat with its formula’s cooling effect.

Much like the sensation from touching an ice cube, the coolness is mild and does last for a brief minute or so. Unfortunately, don’t expect a long-lasting cooling effect with this stuff! It disappears quite fast after applying.

After some research, I believe the logic behind this “chilling” element is the same as opening your pores using warm water and using cold water to close the pores quickly during cleansing to seal the skin from bacteria. As this product also has pore tightening properties, the cooling effect would work to increase its effectiveness and would be a great product for people with large pores problems.

Packaging and Design

mall and portable the Innisfree Eco Ice Cotton Toner fits nice and snug in your hand and is also the perfect size to put in your bag.

The spray can design is very effective and the nozzle dispensed the

product with no problem at all.

Overall, it was very easy to use and dispensing the product was not messy at all.

VALUE FOR MONEY

t roughly $15 the Innisfree Eco Ice Cotton Toner is a fun and practical product that is well worth the price.

Unfortunately, these cooling effect products are only available during the summertime so don’t expect to see these little guys being available all year

round.

If you happen to be in South Korea during the season or see them online I would definitely recommend trying these out.

FML: The Road Less Taken

All I want,

is your hand in mine.

Seeking adventure in these empty streets.

Head Scarf: Sense of Place | Shirt: Zara | Shoes: Jeffrey Campbell | Shirt: Korea | Outerwear: Sanctuary

If you ever are in Tokyo during Golden Week, it might shock you at how split down the middle the city can be between the busy bargain-crazed crowds the popular department stores and shopping streets gather and find how freely you can walk down the middle of a usually busy road that runs through your neighbourhood with no cars in sight for hours.

Taking this rare opportunity, I was able to enjoy some new places I would not have found if I haven’t taken the luxury of taking the road less taken and enjoyed the quieter scenes away from the big centre.

This casual outfit has been my go-to get up lately but this. head. scarf. This headscarf from Sense of Place I love so much I can’t seem to leave the house without it these days. The big lazy bow in the front makes everything look chilled AF while sipping a too classy looking hot chocolate or walking under festive Koi fish banners.

Is there a fashion item you can’t live without lately?

Greatly Terrific Food Outing: Mezzanino Ristorante at Danks Street Produce Merchants

OVERALL SUMMARY

Best Antipasti Experience!

Part farmers’ market and part restaurant, we went to experience Italian dining of a different kind at the Danks Street Produce Merchants’ Mezzanino Ristorante. Expect traditional Italian food fanfare, fancy drinks, and… marble food trolleys?!

Setting & Atmosphere

here is something to be said about the vibe of Danke Street Produce Merchants that makes it one of the most intriguing markets to visit if you are a foodie at heart.

Inside is like a little community of independent producers working together, showing off beautiful displays of cheese, hams, dried goods, and more that makes it a joy wandering around the food displays and getting lost in the varieties of pasta to jams.

Resting above the European inspired gourmet food market is Mezzanino Ristorante. This sun-lit, window of walls restaurant is a perfect lunch spot during the day but would also be a stunning venue when dining as the sun goes down.

It’s quite rare to see an open style plan mezzanine this large in Sydney and the

enormous space has lent itself to a wonderful new dining concept: serving Italian food served yum cha style!

Yes, it may seem a bit odd to see these two cuisines cross paths in one place but by no way is this a fusion of taste. It’s a fusion of eating style.

While there is an ale-carte menu of traditional pasta and mains, the real way to eat is ordering off the piattini menu (Italian for “small dishes”). Each piattini is made fresh, delivered around each table, and in certain amounts to maintain each dishes’ quality. The pace is not rushed and loud like a bustling street market but relaxed as you have one drink in hand and the full view of the open kitchen watching the display of food rested on a marble cart roll up to pick and choose.

Food

ince there is nothing, I say nothing better in this world than cured meat, we left the mains for another day and decided to feast on the variety of piattini dishes that were available on the day. Pass the antipesti this way, please!

From simple caprese salad to pâté and crostini dishes, the food served is a rotating menu and offers a bit of everything from olives to Italian food must-have arancini rice balls to fresh oysters.

The thing that I love about this menu is that the “simple but tasty” logic really highlights the quality of each ingredient used in the dishes while eating. Interestingly, all ingredients used are also available downstairs in the marketplace which is a great opportunity to stock up on some new ingredients if you are feeling adventurous cooking at home.

Also, check out their cocktail menu for some interesting drinks like their signature Aperol Spritz!

Marinated Octopus Salad

Antipasto – Cured Meat, Olives, Focaccia, Marinated Artichoke, Cheese and Honey Glazed Sun-Dried Tomato

Mushroom and Cheese Arancini Balls

Pâté and Crostini

Honey Glazed Beetroot Salad with Nuts and Cheese

Anchovies with Lavash Toast

Strawberry Infused Aperol Spritz and Bellini | $12 and $11

Service

rriving on an odd weekday for lunch, the service was very prompted and friendly.

The staff were very helpful, explaining how to order off the trolley as well as explaining each dish since some had no set name or would need to be made-

to-order in the kitchen like the arancini.

Not being well-versed in Italian cuisine, being able to take our time to ask the staff some questions came in handy when we encountered an Italian word we weren’t sure of.

Value For Money

or restaurant-quality Italian food that also included a seafood range, the price was very affordable!

Each Piattini ranged between $8-$14 per plate and as for the drink

menu, the cocktails were not overpriced at all, great for anyone who enjoys a little day drinking.

Rainy Day Don’t Care.

Rainy day outfits are basically a fabric experiment of combining rubber, zip locking, poncho plastic, and polyester-something in an attempt to avoid being a wet mess when arriving from A to B.

But if looks could kill, the majority of rainwear is designed for functionality than style so finding a raincoat that even looks actually good while suffering in the rain is hard to come by.

Though there are women’s raincoats out there now that look great, a while ago they were always styled to stop somewhere around the hip, leaving everything below exposed to mother nature. The rain, unfortunately, doesn’t stop only at my waist…

Enter the world of men’s rainwear. This was the place to find a cool looking raincoat that was long enough to cover you up but light enough to wear in the heat of a summer monsoon.

It was here that I found Weekday’s Sune Raincoat in that perfect unisex style that would compliment not only men but women as well. As an added bonus, I also found out the MUJI organic cotton bag pack I bought as a school bag is also water resistant! Come at me rain! I am now 100% water repellant!

If I can impart some style words of wisdom, here are my dos and don’ts of rainy day outfits:

  • If you like rain boots, try and find one that will compliment any outfit and is made from a softer rubber rather than looking for the cheapest one. A rain boot that is tight and hard to take off is like ripping your legs off.
  • Rainy weather is actually a great time to bust out and show off your accessories like a nice umbrella, a cute beanie or scarf etc. It not only makes your outfit interesting but it acts as another layer of protection from the rain.
  • Though being wet sucks, getting your favourite outfits ruined by dirt and splash back is even more annoying. Be aware that rain also makes mud and makes every little thing stick to your clothes so don’t wear your most expensive fabrics out. Suede is definitely a no!

Until Next Time!

Winter Things: Accessories Look Book

Here, I’m focusing on some jewelry pieces I picked up recently and pieces I forgot at home in Sydney that I haven’t worn out and creating some go-to coordinate outfits for each.

Rosy Gold

I’m really enjoying rose gold tones and thought it would be nice to pair it with something casual to make it look sports lux with these cute overalls and fitted cropped top… and this oversized nude toned coat because it is cold AF here.

Boundless

From the mastermind of Vanessa Hong’s blog, The Haute Pursuit, these cuff from THPSHOP are chunky but will never weigh you down. This is my first purchase from a fashion blogger turned fashion entrepreneur venture and I really like the sleek and unique design of their jewelry range.  Though I don’t really have many sharp chic clothes, this all black pairing works well I feel.

Harness Play

Remember how body harnesses were like “a thing” back circa 2013? They made a few cameos last year during the Louis Vuitton Fall runway and have taunted my need to find one which was a fine play of trying to look daringly fashionably interesting and tasteful.

Though I’ve seen some pieces while online hunting, quality, and good design were always key and I found that the ones from designer Elif Domanic were great because they were designed within mind to be wearable for daily situations as well.

Top: WEGO | Jacket: Vintage (Korea) | Skirt: Forever21 | Clutch: Korea

Besides my current folk style obsession, I am also enjoying the casual varsity look that seems to be coming back into style again. It’s such a winter friendly style since you can layer different textures and patterns together to pull off something preppy.

I am also loving the whole collar necklace trend and then I saw this shirt while shopping at WEGO with an attached collar faux necklace AND it was on sale for $8! The best of both worlds and such a steal!

On another note, I’m heading back to Sydney next week after my one-year absence for a short visit! So excited to be reunited with my other half Talyssa and everyone, as well as going from cold to hot as I plan to visit the beach as much as possible.

Until next time!
