FML: Let’s Make a Summer Jam

How to make A summer jam

Mixing clap beats to spinning auto tunes on loops,

here’s how to make your next mix tape jam for summer.

In your empty glass jar:

Add generous amounts of sunshine.

And a cup of clear skies mixed with the heavy scent of coconut sunscreen.

Cover under the shade of a large beach umbrella and add a pinch of something upbeat to keep the bad weather away.

Shake well and share with the company of good friends to enjoy all summer long.*

My recipe for this summer I guess? A bit different and odd but I thought it was a funny little writing exercise to start off this post.

I am for some reason listening to a lot of summer tunes both current and old recently and noticed a distinct melody hook that made you always think: “Ah, this sounds like a summer bop!”

Kind of much like this botanical leaf print! Whenever I see this print I always think “summer” and started to think how I should style this top. It wasn’t easy actually. It’s very athletic in style and would go very nicely with some yoga pants to the gym but to change this into an every day outing look, I paired it with my favourite oversized white button down shirt and added some 90’s flare details with my usual denim fringe shorts and brightly printed headband which seemed to make everything come together. It just goes to show, never be afraid to mix and match styles! You never know what you might end up with.

What songs are you listening to currently?

Until Next Time!

FML: Quiet Happiness

Quiet Happiness

I wade through the waters
where man meets nature
turning my back
I follow the unknown and free

A change in the breeze,
a gentle caress…

…singing soft lullabies
that warm my chest

Surprisingly unexpected,
an interesting reaction,
the closer I walk to happiness
the scarier it feels.

The Hidden Thimble

Two Piece:  Bardot  | Butterfly pins: KisforKani

How cute is this two piece?  It’s definitely channeling all the things I love – vintage vibes in particular!

Also, how do you guys like the poem intros we’ve be writing in our outfit posts?  Personally, I’ve really enjoyed writing them – I love being creative, and I look forward to writing my posts and sharing a little piece of how I’m feeling at a particular time in my life.

It brings me onto an interesting subject in my life at the moment.  I can say with honesty that this point in my life right now might be the happiest I’ve ever been.  I mean truly content..not overjoyed, not ecstatic, just a quiet happiness.

I’ve taken my career into my hands, working on the projects I want to, and starting my own business was the best decision I’ve made.  I’m learning new skills everyday that fascinate me and my creativity is buzzing. I’m exploring creative writing, video, calligraphy, photo editing, photography and continuing digital marketing strategy.   I have a really solid relationship – the first that’s been so positive and trusting.  And soon, I’ll be travelling solo for 3 months around Europe!

But the price of happiness has been a lingering fear. It’s so scary to give up your security and follow what you truly want.  It’s scary every time I take a step toward the unknown.

But the funny thing is, it’s quietly paying off. Everything slowly and strangely works itself out and falls into place nicely.

If you could stop, and do something you really wanted to do right now, what would it be?

FML: The Witching Hour

It’s just a bunch of hocus pocus

A silence lures me as night’s magic brews

Captive spirits walk amongst things not pure

The days grow cold and darkness falls

My shivers warn through the nothingness

They say the darkness tricks you with its secrets

The creeping fog will leave no trail if left behind

When the witching hour strikes on All Hallow’s Eve

Romper: BNKR | Ring: House of Harlow | Necklace: H&M | Hat: Overseas (Korea)

Channeling some inner witchery, the month of October is probably the best time to bust out some hocus pocus and upgrade your everyday look with a slight magic touch. A bit of glitter shimmer cast over the eyelids, some costume jewellery that charms like a spell. The festive air brings the occasion to celebrate the inner cheeky devil in us all.

Speaking of styling, the cut of this BNKR playsuit is pure witchcraft garb magic. I love how the sleeves flow from the collar and ends in high elongated cuffs for dramatic flow. It’s become one of my favourite online stores to browse and feel inspired!

What was your halloween outfit this year?

Until Next Time!

FML: Lazy Sunday Thoughts

BODY TYPE: MYSELF

 Real women are fat…

…and thin and both and neither and otherwise
– Hanne Blank

Making her way inside, the host greets her with a welcoming hello.

“Would you like a soft drink?” he asks, pointing towards the array of drinks on the table nearby “we’ve got lemonade…coke…”

“No thank you, I’m alright.”

“Oh..watching your weight are we?” he says chuckling to himself as he disappears into the crowd.

Two Piece: Lady Luna Boutique | Jewelry: Wanderlust + Co  | Hair: DJs Hair Artistry

Since I was younger, I’ve always found something very wrong with the whole “real women have curves” concept.  Naturally, I have always been very skinny.  Yes I know, I’m one of those “lucky people” that can eat whatever they want and not gain weight – and don’t get me wrong I’m definitely grateful I have this quality – but I wanted to shed a little light on the other side of being naturally thin.

My whole life people have always assumed that when I reject food, it’s because I’m trying to lose or maintain my current weight or that I’m afraid of gaining weight.   But actually, I reject food because of the same reasons as everyone else. I’m just not hungry or I don’t like what’s being offered.

But back to the real women have curves thing, more than once I’ve been caught up in conversations with a group of girls all chatting about “real women having curves” and that men want a “real women” with a bit of meat they can grab onto.  In these situations there’s just me and my petite self, standing there awkwardly, feeling like I shouldn’t be there.

So how does this all link together? Well, I actually shot this outfit last year but felt too self conscious to post it.  When I wear an outfit like this in public I feel like I’m judged because I am skinny.  Skinny shaming is a thing that for some reason, seems to be more socially acceptable than fat shaming. It’s receiving comments like “I feel like I could snap your legs in two” or saying that I look like a chihuahua because my head is bigger than my body (yes, that has happened), or simply judging me for not feeling hungry or wanting to go to the gym.

So I guess my gripe with the “real women have curves” movement is that it’s not empowering to all women.  It still excludes women based on an appearance requirement that decides what a “real woman” should look like.  Females of smaller stature shouldn’t be considered less of a women and undesirable to men just because they are skinny.

So girls, next time you’re trying to empower each other and talking about how you’re “all about that bass” and that men “like big butts and they cannot lie,” maybe consider talking about how all women are real women that are beautiful as they naturally are – fat, thin, both, neither and otherwise.

Have you been judged based on your appearance?  Let me know in the comments below :)

FML: Forest Dream

Between the past and the present

Wandering down ancient holy steps, the path is long and silent

I sway gently as if dancing to my own song, and feel the quiet tenderness of the forest

The meeting place – a carved stone

Under its hefty weight, a mystery lies safely hidden here

Unchanged by time’s flow

Maybe we can find the secret together

And stay ageless like this sacred bamboo forest

Dress: Vintage (Japan) | Sandals: Lulus | Rings: Whistles and Overseas (Australia and Korea)

If you have ever traveled to Japan and ventured to the culture capital of Kyoto, you will have no doubt fallen in love with its old world charm!

From temple hopping to the hustle of downtown shotengai life, the history of each place breathes an air of something bygone of what it might feel like to step back in time to where the geishas ruled the social scene and the heyday of merchants and commerce that is still well-preserved within the formal capital.

Kyoto’s cultural preservation is what gives the city a sense of mystery to every craftsmanship, spiritual power spot and natural creation. Though this dress is very European folk in embroidery, I couldn’t help feeling like the red and white was reminiscent of a shrine maiden’s robes as she wonders around finding the mystical in unexpected places.

Is there a special place you find magical or uplifting?

Until Next Time!

FML: On Wednesdays, We Wear Pink!

Shh DON’T TELL

I keep my secrets hidden from you

These words that hurt to hear

Words I etched half-heartly in the heated moment take form – a hurt that stains these pages

Set aside the burn to start again

Turning these pages tangled with delicate string

Tie my happiness in neat little bows and tell me how to be better without you

Top: Bershka | Skirt: ASOS | Sunglasses: Soeurs.Co

Yes I am fully aware that it is indeed a Tuesday today but how strict is the “On Wednesdays, we wear pink” rule exactly?

It’s one of my favourite quotes from Mean Girls that I can relate so well thinking about my high school years. From calling dibs on who wore what first to where you sat during lunch, you could form some sort of secret club through little acts of exclusivity – school politics were always quirky like that.

Self-titled “Drifter” in high school culture speak, I am thankful I have never experience anything like a “Burn Book” situation during the I guess “bratty drama” stage of awkward teenage life but I was no less immune to the dirty cruel game of cat-and-mouse we used to play to prove one another wrong. Once we battled our way to be on top, what did we gain from squashing the other down? Was the prize worth it?

No matter how much history we may have had together, the words we used cut through deeper than a sting. When nothing can be taken back, in times like these, we simply can do one thing: let one another go.

Do you remember your first big friend fight?

How do you solve conflict within your social circles?

Until Next Time!
