Everything You Need to Know About the Pamukkale Travertine Pools

NOTE: This post is a deep dive into the Pamukkale Travertines only, for more info on the town of Pamukkale, the UNESCO Heritage site of Hierapolis, where to stay, a suggested itinerary and more, please read the following post: 24 Hours In Pamukkale

As the beauty of the day disappears beyond the horizon…

I wonder what kind of magic the night will bring…

– The Hidden Thimble

A Little Bit Of History

As one of the rarest geological phenomenon’s on Earth, Pamukkale’s travertines are fascinating.  What exactly are they? How was something so big created? Where do the hot springs come from?  Does the water really have healing abilities?

Never fear, everything you ever wanted to know about the Pamukkale travertines will be answered in this post!

Pamukkale means “Cotton Castle” in English

Let’s begin with Turkish mythology. Turkish legend has it that Pamukkale’s travertines were formed long ago by giants who they left their cotton harvest outside to dry.  The harvested cotton solidified and formed the ‘Cotton Castle’ we see today.

Realistically though, it’s creation is even more wondrous than that.  When you think about it,  the Earth and science are also very magical things, just like the story of the giants. The travertines first started forming about 400,000 years ago, after a series of earthquakes caused thermal waters to flow down the mountainside.  These mineral rich waters deposited a sludge like substance called calcium carbonate – you can feel it under your feet when you swim in the pools.  Being exposed to the sun, the calcium carbonate was simultaneously evaporated and crystallised into terrace like formations.  The result? Magic cloud like-thermal pools you can swim in!

Things to see and do near the travertines

While explained in detail in my 24 Hours in Pamukkale post, here’s a short list of the things you can do in close vicinity to the travertine site:

  • Walk through the ancient city of Hierapolis
  • Visit the Hierapolis archaeological museum
  • Take a dip in the Antique Pool (also known as the Cleopatra pools)
  • Walk along the travertines and take a swim in some of the pools
  • Catch the sunset over the travertines (photography guide below for those interested – my favourite photos are from sunset!)
  • Paragliding
  • Professional photo services – there are two photography services offered where you can get ‘professional photos’ taken.  There is one at the top of the Pamukkale site, near the food, and one inside the Antique Pool area.

Tips and TRICKS

1. How to Get amazing photos WITHOUT crowds

When the locals told me that Pamukkale was the most spectacular at sunset I made sure I got myself a good spot for photos. And the locals couldn’t have been more right – it was absolutely gorgeous!

Here are my tips to get the perfect shot:

  • Visit out of season.  I visited Pamukkale from the 11th – 13th May and although considered the ‘shoulder season’ (the town was very quiet and sleepy according to the locals), the travertines themselves were packed!  If you really want photos with no one in them – especially in the pools you can swim in – I would visit in winter.
  • Try the North Gate Entrance: If you’re a really keen bean (I actually didn’t know this and I’m pretty bummed I didn’t!)  Pamukkale’s North Gate apparently opens at 6am instead of the 8am opening times of the other two gates.  This means you can get in before the crowded tour busses and get all the photos you could dream of!  This entrance is only accessible by car though.
  • Stay until sunset: The locals were definitely right, sunset is the most beautiful time to capture the travertines, so you definitely want to make sure you claim a good spot well before. The pools mirror the pastel colours of the sky and it is absolutely amazing to watch.
In May, sunset was a little later (around 7:30-8PM) and interestingly, some of the tour buses stayed back this late, so there were still quite a few tourists around.
  • Set up at least 40mins before sunset:  As a solo traveler, it is definitely more difficult to take those ‘instagram-worthy’ shots of yourself amongst the beautiful sites you see.  So a lot of the success of your photos comes down to preparation and planning.  I reserved a spot about 40minutes before sunset.  This allowed me to set up all my gear (tripod, remote and camera) as well as do a few test shots before the crowds came to watch the sunset.
  • Shoot from the area that’s closed off to tourists:  For preservation purposes, the most beautiful areas of the travertines are closed off to tourists, meaning you can get a clear shot of them at sunset without anyone in the background.  Yes it does mean you can’t get a shot of you swimming in them, but you are allowed to sit on the outer pools, which still creates a magical shot – see below!
In this section, you are only allowed to walking on the stoned terrance that I am sitting on, and the two greyish terraces below. Anywhere else is off limits. As you can see in this photo, I reserved my spot before sunset!

2. The site Doesn’t look like the pictures you see online

I know, I know. The photos I’ve shown so far say the opposite to what I’m claiming above, but I’m going to expose to you below what MOST of the site actually looks like.

To be honest, when I first arrived, I couldn’t help but feel a little disappointed because of how differently the site looked to all of the advertising brochures and images you see online.

Majority of the travertines are completely dry.

Because of this, you can’t help but feel like you’ve been lied to.  Don’t get me wrong, it’s still really beautiful, but the beautiful images you see in guidebooks and tourist websites that show people swimming in an abundance of overflowing travertines is a LIE.  These images are from wayyy back in the past when these areas were still open to the general public. Since then, they have been been closed and ‘dried out’ to allow the travertines time to recover from the terrible treatment of the tourism industry.

To give an example:

Media images look something like this:

Pamukkale Media Images

But the site actually looks more like this:

Pamukkale Pools When Dry

These cute little dogs were playing and sleeping in the dry areas

Psst – the point to the left of this photo where you can see some people gather is where you want to take your sunset photos from

3. You Can’t Swim in most of the travertines

Any travertine not located along the main pathway is off limits to visitors. There are only about 3 or 4 large travertines available for the public to swim in, and they are packed with tourists.
Over the years Pamukkale has faced a lot of damage from the tourism industry – there even use to be hotels that were built on top of the ancient city of Hierapolis, which destroyed some of the ruins back in the 1960s.  Some hotels back then even used the thermal water in their own swimming pools and even the tourists feet trampling all over the travertines has caused significant damage.  As a result, most pools are dried out and closed off the the public.
Heres a comparison from past to present:

Media images look something like this:

But here is a more accurate picture of the pools you can swim in:

Oh and you might want to get there early…:
Crowds at opening time (8AM):

Crowds just 40 mins later….PACKED!!

4. The water has healing powers

The thermal waters are high in minerals and are known to cure a variety of diseases.  I had so many locals tell me about success stories they had witnessed.  Some of the many diseases the thermal waters claim to cure or benefit include:

  • Asthma
  • Rheumatism
  • High blood pressure
  • Circulatory issues
  • Overall good for skin and eye disorders
  • Kidney stones
  • Stroke
  • Physical exhaustion
  • Digestive issues
  • Nutritional disorders

5. Consider what you wear

Plan for getting wet, especially if you enter from the town entrance like I did.  It involves a walk up the travertine pathway, which has water running down it.

To minimize damage from tourists, you are also required to remove any shoes, and contrary to how the travertines look, the rock is actually quite pointy and slippery under your bare feet which makes climbing up from this entrance rather uncomfortable!(In the travertine pools though, the floor is soft thanks to the build up of the sludge-like calcium carbonate)

You don’t want to be wearing long pants and lace up shoes with socks. Ideally dress for the Pamukkale travertines as you would the beach – thongs (flip flops for the US people, yes in Australia we call them thongs), swimmers and something light on top (think a beach dress, or a simple T-shirt and boardshorts). A backpack that’s waterproof is also ideal.

Turkey is predominantly a muslim country, so remember to be respectful and cover up to an extent.  I’m not saying you can’t wear a bikini when you go swimming – you can, but let’s not take it to the Brazilian bikini level trend that seems to be everywhere now (at least in Australia).  You know the ones where your bikini bottoms are basically a g-string.

6. Take the best Entrance FOR YOUR NEEDS

Pamukkale has three entrances;

  • The North Gate: This gate requires a car to get to, but it apparently opens at 6AM if you’re looking to get into the heritage site early to beat the crowds or to take photos.  The entrance starts at the beginning of the town of Hierapolis, so you need to walk through it before you reach the travertine site – it’s quite a far walk if you’re not prepared!  The gate does get quite busy later in the day.
  • South Gate:  This gate requires a car to get to if you’re staying in town.  It opens at 8AM and is the most popular (and busiest!) entrance to the travertines.  All the tour buses drop people off here.  At this entrance you start at the top of the travertines.
  • Town Gate:  This is the easiest gate to enter the travertine site if you’re staying in town and opens at 8AM.  It’s a lot less crowded way to view the travertines from 8AM, than to start at the North gate as you’ll find most of the crowding occurs there.

Greatly Terrific Food Outing: Indigo

Review: Indigo Double Bay - King Prawn Bruschetta

THE VERDICT
  • Setting & Atmosphere
  • Food
  • Service
  • Value For Money
4

OVERALL SUMMARY

Slightly more special than your regular lunch!

It’s always a sure bet that any place that blends Modern Australian with a little bit of European cuisine is going to be good.  Plus, since Indigo is touted as Double Bay’s best-kept secret, we knew we were in for a treat! Boasting the ultimate dining experience, Indigo seeks to blend the best of both cultures when it comes to serving the finest quality food, coffee and service…well let’s just hope the service is a little more Australian than European…if you’ve been to Europe, I’m sure you know what I’m talking about ;)

Setting and Atmosphere

Nothing gets more European than alfresco dining does it?  There’s just something really nice about sitting outside along the street, while eating a delicious meal and silently judging watching people pass you by. If you’re listening to this and wishing about being whisked away to Europe, then you’ll be happy to know you can get your own slice of alfresco dining right here.  Indigo has a really beautiful outdoor set up in the heart of Double Bay, perfect for the warmer months.  Think sunshine, trees, a great meal, fresh air and the gorgeous Australian weather.

However, if the outdoors are not really your thing, you can choose to dine inside.  Indigo’s interior is modern, topped off with marble tables – yaaaassss, I love when my food is served with a side of extra!

And would you really expect anything less of Double Bay?  Indigo is effortlessly chic and stylish and so too is the crowd it draws.  Speaking of crowds, this place is always packed. Every day. So I’d say “Double Bay’s best kept secret” is out of the bag and has been for a while now.  Sorry Guys!

Food

Indigo’s menu has an extensive selection of breakfast and lunch time dishes, which really makes it the ULTIMATE brunch destination.  I found myself wanting to try everything on the menu…including the numerous Asian inspired dishes?  Not that I’m complaining, I love Asian food, but it wasn’t what I was expecting from a Modern Australian and European menu.

The dish that immediately caught my eye was the King Prawn Bruschetta.  I’d never seen a similar dish offered in any Sydney cafe’s I’ve been to so far and I am a mega prawn lover.

Served on a slice of garlic Levain Bread, topped with avo mash, cucumber, tomato, onion, king prawns and a dollop of dill aioli, the flavour combinations were absolutely delicious.  This has got to be one of the best brunch dishes I’ve tried; it was unique, delicious and very impressive to look at.  I’m super judgey when it comes to prawns and I feel like 90% of restaurants can’t get them right.  The result: rubbery prawns.  But not here! These were succulent and perfectly cooked!!!

Keeping with the bruschetta theme, we also ordered the Mushroom Bruschetta from the “Specials” menu.  Served with mixed mushrooms, garlic, truffle oil, Parmesan, basil and poached eggs on grilled Levain bread, this dish just missed the mark for an equally great dish – or maybe I’m just biased towards my King Prawn Bruschetta.   In terms of flavours, there was something missing that I couldn’t quite put my finger on and overall I wish the dish had a little more of the truffle and garlic flavours shine through.

Because we couldn’t resist, we also ordered the Korean Pork Belly sliders – they sounded amazing with pressed and fried confit pork belly, pickled cucumber and ssamjang glaze.  Unfortunately they were a little disappointing and didn’t really bring out the Korean flavours I was looking for.  Maybe some Kimchi or Korean plum syrup mixed with gochujjang would have helped to give a more authentic Korean flavour.

Finally, we washed it all down with some freshly squeezed juices.

SERVICE

Service here was very friendly and reasonably quick considering how busy the place was!

VALUE FOR MONEY

This is Double Bay, so expect Double Bay pricing.  My King Prawn Bruschetta set me back $27 for one slice of bread.  Yes I was still hungry after….but man it tasted good.  Otherwise, majority of the dishes on the menu are around standard brunch prices ($15 – $20) with the lunch items costing a bit more $25 – $30.  Definitely great for a ‘slightly more special’ than your regular lunch!

7 Magical Hot Air Balloon Views in Cappadocia

Cappadocia: Experience The Most Magical Sunrise in the World

f you’ve planned a trip to Cappadocia, it’s likely that one of the first things on your bucket list is to see their famous Hot Air Balloon Sunrises.  Now I know you’ve seen the photos on Instagram and are probably wondering “where the heck did they snap that AMAZING photo???”   In fact, I was actually surprised at how difficult it was to find the exact locations of some of the photos I’d seen online, let alone find anywhere that had documented them with a location I could input into my Google Maps.

Never fear though, I’ve complied a list of my favourite viewpoints, including all the research I did during my trip. So yes, this includes CORRECT location names, photo inspiration and exact Google Map geo locations!!

Sunrise Viewpoints

Interactive Map

How to Use This Map: This is an interactive map you can use to find your preferred viewing location.  To use the map, click the icon in the top left hand corner to pop open the navigation bar.  Here you can click on each location to navigate to it.  The area coloured in yellow is the balloon launch site area.  The area coloured in purple is a rough guide of the balloon flight area.

Aydın Kırağı (Sunrise/Sunset Point)

7 Magical Hot Air Balloon Viewpoints in Cappadocia

efinitely one of the BEST, if not THE BEST place in Göreme to view the balloons at sunrise.  This viewpoint was my favourite for a number of reasons:

The most difficult thing about finding this viewpoint was that everyone referred to it as “Sunrise Point” or “Sunset Point” (even the signs in town call it that) but this is not what the location is called in GoogleMaps.  In fact, if you try to type Sunrise or Sunset Point into GoogleMaps, you will be taken to the completely wrong place.  Instead AYDIN KIRAĞI is where you want to go if you plan on using Google as your guide.

Love Valley

nfortunately I didn’t get a chance to venture to this viewpoint myself, but it was high on my list.  The photos from here look amazing and the best part about it is that you get to capture Cappadocia’s beautiful landscape in the shot. Unlike the previous location, this one is much harder to get to without a car (which I didn’t have for this part of my journey!)

While you can hike there, it’ll take you around 30mins and you’ll be walking most of it in the dark in order to get there in time for sunrise.  Location 2 in the map above leads you to a viewpoint that overlooks Love Valley (as seen in the first Instagram picture below), however shots from within the valley, looking up at the balloons flying above also look really effective (Instagram pic #2).

On Horseback

any companies in Cappadocia offer sunrise horse riding tours and I can’t think of a more magical way to view the balloons and take photos!  I did a Horseback Photoshoot with Cappadocia Ranch, but they also offer sunrise Horse Riding Tours.

Cappadocia Ranch provide pick up and drop off from your hotel and if you’d like more info, you can read my full review by clicking below:

From The Balloon Launch Sites

nother awesome viewpoint I really wanted to check out (if only time permitted!) were the balloon launch sites.  Not only can you get some great up-close shots with the balloons as they inflate, it’s also a great way to gather time lapse footage of the balloons firing up and taking flight. I particularly think these shots look quite majestic, however if you’re not taking an actual balloon flight (in which you are picked up from your hotel and driven to the balloon launch site), these locations can be a little difficult to find as they can change day to day.

To find out exactly where the balloons will be launching you can either ask a balloon

company directly the day before, or in my case, the hotel manager at Cave Hotel Saksagan was very knowledgeable and also did balloon tours on the side.

Similar to Love Valley, if you don’t have a car, this viewpoint can be difficult to reach.  It is approximately a 30-40min hike depending on which launch site you visit.  Getting all dressed up for the photo and then having to hike for 40 minutes just to get to the destination isn’t particularly ideal. But by all means, if you have a car, definitely go here!

Inside A Hot Air Balloon

kay so this is an obvious one, and you might be thinking “why is this so far down the list??”  But I will stress that taking a photo inside a hot air balloon is not as easy as you think.  They. are. Crowded. Making it difficult for you to move freely and take a photo, let alone get a shot without anyone else it it.

This however is the only way to get in-air action shots and birds-eye views over Goreme’s beautiful rock formations and valleys. GoPro’s on hand held tripods and selfie sticks are your best bet to capture a great photo.

Cave Hotels

kay I KNOW it’s surprising that this viewpoint is 6th on my list, because all the photos on Instagram are of people watching the balloons from the balconies of cave hotels.  But seriously. It’s kinda over rated – when it comes to watching the balloons at least.

I stayed at Mithra Cave Hotel, which is probably one of the two more well known cave hotels to watch the balloons.  From my personal observation, Mithra Cave Hotel actually has a better view than the renowned Sultan Cave Suites (Mithra over looks Sultan to its left and is a little higher).  I could also see from my view on Mithra’s rooftop,  a lot of other hotels in the area that looked to have the same or possibly a better view, plus, they were much less crowded.  Unfortunately the hotels don’t have any signage, so I can’t tell you their names, but I do want to point out that you don’t need to stay at Sultan Cave Suites or Mithra exclusively to get a great view of the balloons at sunrise.  I would like to stress that staying at Mithra Cave Hotel is not overrated (it’s actually amazing), but when it comes to balloon view points, I believe finding a lesser known hotel nearby Mithra or Sultan Cave Suites would provide a similar or better view with a much more pleasant experience.

Anyway, let’s start with the good:

And now the bad…

Red Valley Panoramic View Point

ed Valley Panoramic View Point is last on this list not because it isn’t stunning, but mainly because it is further away from the balloon action.  Being one of the most famous spots to view the sunset in Cappadocia, for sunrise, expect to get a great view of the balloons rising over the Goreme landscape.

The balloons here will start closer to you and gradually move further away as they continue on their flight path. This viewpoint is perfect for panoramic landscape shots that feature the beautiful Goreme landscape as the highlight, and the balloons as a magical accompaniment.

Kiehl's Product Review

[better-reviews]

Finest Apothecary Skincare

I am all for apothecary and natural skincare.  In fact, getting a skincare consultation, switching to natural products and following a personalised skincare routine was one of the best decisions I’ve ever made.  2 years on, my skin has completely transformed and is relatively acne free. In case you didn’t know, I suffered from some pretty bad acne for quite some time!

If you find yourself struggling to find the perfect products for your skin, I highly recommend going to have a chat to a skincare consultant in any Kiehl’s store during the remainder of September for a free customised skincare service.  With every consultation, you’ll also get 5 free personalised samples to take home and try out!

Now onto the reviews!  I have oily-combination and acne prone skin so my experiences below are based on how the product reacted to my skin type.  If you have a different skin type, you might want to try the products yourself (ask for a sample if you’re not ready to pay without trying!)

Kiehl's Product Review

Kiehl's Let Us Change Your Skin Haul and ReviewKiehl’s Calendula Herbal Extract Toner

This toner is ideal for normal to oily skin types, making it perfect for me!  What I love most about this toner is the smell.  It’s an amazing almost tea-like smell that’s very natural, I can’t get enough of it!  The product itself is also gorgeous to look at, with hand picked calendula petals floating inside.

Being made with whole calendula flowers and pure extracts like great burdock root, this toner aims to gently cleanse skin of remaining dirt, oil and impurities, while calming and healing the complexion. It’s also alcohol free, and did not irritate or contribute to my acne in any way!

The only thing I disliked about this toner is the application.  The toner I was using before was a spray application, which I really love.  Being an environmentally conscious person, Kiehl’s Calendula Herbal Extract Toner requires the use of a cotton pad upon every application, and I couldn’t help feeling like my facial care waste contribution had now doubled. My second issue with the application is that is goes against the calming properties of the toner.  Rubbing the cotton pad over my face, even gently, promotes redness in my skin.  With a spray application this does not happen and therefore calms the skin more effectively.

If this toner was a spray application, I would have given this product 5/5 stars and even swapped it into my regular routine!

Kiehl’s Creamy Eye Treatment with Avocado

Suited for all skin types including sensitive skin, this was my favourite Kiehl’s product from the “Let Us Change Your Skin” pack.  Out of all products, I noticed the most impact from this one and I really found my eye area looking brighter and younger after using this product for 2 weeks.

Enriched with avocado oil and shea butter, the creamy eye treatment deeply moisturises and hydrates the skin under your eyes to prevent dark circles and keeps the skin looking bright instead of dry and dull – something I really noticed!  This product also helps to prevent fine lines from forming.

With the skin around the eye area being extremely delicate, this product just missed out on a 5 star rating because of its application and texture.  The texture of this product is not creamy, but more like a paste that turns watery with the heat of your fingertips upon application (at least that is how it appeared to me).  The only problem with this was when the weather got a little colder and my face and hands were cold/dry, the product failed to immediately turn watery, causing the paste-like texture to pull at the delicate skin under my eyes.  This product would be great if it became watery a little quicker, maybe on direct contact with the skin.

Kiehl’s Powerful Strength Line Reducing Concentrate

One of Kiehl’s more expensive products, the Powerful Strength Line Reducing Concentrate claims to visibly reduce wrinkles, signs of ageing, improve skin texture, minimise pores and boost skin radiance after 2 weeks.  It is formulated with 12.5% Vitamin C and Hyaluronic Acid, making this a clinical grade serum.

Maybe it’s the fact that I don’t have that many wrinkles yet, but I really only noticed complexion become more radiant. I haven’t really noticed any reduction in wrinkles (again I might not have enough) and I also haven’t noticed a change in the size of my pores.  However, to give this product more of a fair test, I’ve given it to my mum to test over the next two weeks and will report back with her results!

I also want to add that this product worked very well when integrated into my current skincare routine and did not cause me to break out.

For me personally, this product didn’t do all that was promised annnndd considering it’s quite pricey, my rating was influenced accordingly.  This may change when I report back on my mother’s results!

Kiehl’s ultra facial cream

Kiehl’s Ultra Facial Cream provides 24 hour hydration for your skin.  Formulated with nature-powered ingredients such as Antarcticine (extracted from microorganisms sourced from sea glaciers) and Imperate Cylindrica, a plant indigenous to the Australian desert with excellent water retention qualities, this cream aims to leave skin comfortable and balanced in even the most harshest weather conditions.

Because of all the natural products and science behind this product, I really wanted to like this cream more than I did. Although formulated for all skin types, I did find this cream caused me to break out in my problem areas, like most hydrating and thick creams when used on oily/acne prone skin.  However, considering how thick this cream is, it didn’t feel too heavy or irritating on my skin which I was surprised about!  Overall, this was the product I liked least for my skin type, though I can imagine it would work really well for others!

Review: Horseback Photoshoot with Cappadocia Ranch

Cappadocia Ranch Review - Cappadocia Balloon Sunrise

[better-reviews]

Capturing Magical Moments

With Cappadocia being utterly magical, I wanted to make sure I captured a photo of that magic.  I somehow got it stuck in my head that this magical photo needed to involve a horse, probably because Cappadocia is known as ‘the land of beautiful horses.’  I was thinking the only way I’d be able to get a photo of myself on – or with – a horse was to do one of Cappadocia’s many horseback riding tours.  But even then, I was worried if there would be enough time to capture the perfect photo while on the tour – not to mention, find someone patient enough to take some photos of me during their tour.

Long story short, It was all looking a little bit dismal until I checked into Cave Hotel Saksagan and got talking to the owner.  He mentioned that Cappadica Ranch not only did horse riding tours, but also offered a private Horseback Photoshoot Session.

I repeat, a private Horseback Photoshoot Session!!  Could this be any more perfect?  I was immediately sold.

The Experience

The photoshoot session began with free pick up service from my hotel – already a great start.  Upon arrival, I was invited inside and offered a Turkish Coffee, while the Aktas brothers asked me about what I was looking for in terms of photos.  I already had some inspiration shots on me which I shared and the brothers also had some examples of previous work they could recreate for me.

Next it was time to pick my horse.  Because my outfit was dark, I decided to go with a white horse. I was also able to dress him and chose red and black accents to match my outfit. Once ready, we rode out into the beautiful landscape of Cappadocia and picked a spot for the shoot.

One aspect I really liked was that Cappadocia Ranch gives you the choice of bringing your own photographer, or they can provide this service for you.  This is great for Instagrammers, because it means you can use your own camera and photographer – something some other photoshoot services didn’t allow (i.e. in Pamukkale).  In my case I was traveling solo, and the staff were happy to help and even learnt how to use my DSLR for the shoot!

I was really happy with the length of time the photoshoot session went for and the staff did not make me feel rushed.  In fact, I had to cut the session short because I had another tour to attend!

To finish, I was dropped back off to my hotel.

Professionalism

Even though I’m a blogger, I am EXTREMELY awkward in front of the camera, so if you have this fear going through your mind as you read this, you don’t need to worry.  The Aktas Brothers were extremely professional in directing me how to interact with the horse and also instructing me to do some poses, which really got rid of any awkwardness.

I’m not going to lie though, working with an animal is quite difficult and a little scary – particularly if you’re not use to working with horses – they are big animals!  But the staff are all well experienced and skilled in equestrianism so they were always there to help and instruct me, creating a smooth experience overall.

I will add a note that the staff are not professional photographers, however I was very happy with my photos.

Customer Service

The Aktas Brothers were very welcoming, friendly and enthusiastic.  I really appreciated that the team checked with me continually to make sure I was happy with the photos and to get feedback.  I really felt like they wanted to do a great job and by the end, they had taken just under 500 photos!  As mentioned above, they are not professional photographers but I admired the effort they went to to make sure I had some good shots.

To give you an idea, I was left with about 40 great photos (which is really good!) – all in focus, where the horse and I were facing the camera nicely.  I have picked my favourite 10 to showcase in this blog post and also two bloopers (see below), so you can see what I mean in terms of the difficulty in getting a good photo – sometimes the horse just wouldn’t have it! haha

Value for Money

The online price for this session is 50 euros which equals to just under $80 AUD.  This is pretty expensive for me as a budget-traveler and also quite expensive when compared to Turkish currency.  However, it was the best paid experience I did during my time in Cappadocia and I am very happy with my photos.  I would do it again and also highly recommend the experience to anyone else that wants to create beautiful memories in Cappadocia!

Greatly Terrific Food Outing: Spice Theory, Turramurra

THE VERDICT
  • Setting & Atmosphere
  • Food
  • Service
  • Value For Money
3.9

OVERALL SUMMARY

Modern Indian Cuisine

With no other cuisine using more spices than the Indian cuisine, it’s quite fitting that Turramuurra’s new kid on the block Indian restaurant is named “Spice Theory”.  So what can you expect from Spice Theory?  A sensory experience that celebrates Indian culture, flavours and hospitality.  The exotic menu aims to showcase the very best of Modern Indian Cuisine, so let’s see how the experience was!

SETTING AND ATMOSPHERE

Stepping inside Spice Theory, the first thing I noticed is how incredibly modern and chic it is – very sleek and minimalist in style.  The restaurant is relaxed, cosy and not too loud, making it perfect for an intimate dinner for two and some good conversation!

To add to the cultural experience I would have loved to see a little more culture in the decor!

FOOD

Spice Theory’s menu is extensive and exotic filled with traditional dishes I’d never heard of, to fan favourites (like butter chicken mmm!) all with notes of modern twists. Not knowing where to start, Kailash happily suggested some of the restaurants signature dishes.  I had brought my boyfriend with me – who is vegetarian – and we were very impressed with the variety of vegetarian options on offer.

To start we were served the Dahi Poori Chaat, the Mini Masala Dosa and the Mini Keema Dosa.  Living up to ‘providing a sensory experience’ the dishes were a treat to the eye as much as they were to the tastebuds.  The presentation of dishes at Spice Theory is one of the best I’ve seen amongst the Indian restaurants I’ve been to and all three dishes were flavoursome.  The Dosa’s were perfectly crisp with a flavoursome filling and the accompanying chutney’s really made the flavours sing.

The Dahi Poori Chaat was definitely a highlight.  It was a really unique dish and reminded me of a traditional Indian streetfood I’ve had.  It was great to see how Spice Theory transformed this traditional Indian streetfood into a modern, restaurant-worthy dish.

For main, the vegetarian curry Paneer Saag was definitely a highlight and I absolutely loved Kailash’s suggestion to pair it with a Peshwari Naan – something I wouldn’t have tried otherwise.  The sweetness of the Naan worked with the vegetarian curry beautifully and I am a definite fan of this combo!  We were also served the Chicken Tikka Masala, which was missing the ‘wow’ factor for me in terms of taste, but I appreciated that Spice Theory did not hold back on the heat for this curry! (And for non chilli fans, don’t worry, you can ask for your curries to be non spicy).

Too cool the palette we finished with two deserts; the Rose Panna Cotta and the Payasam.  These deserts were the perfect way to finish the meal being tasty and light for our already full bellies.  The Panna Cotta was perfectly creamy with a light rose fragrance and the Payasam was subtly spiced. Both beautifully presented and delicious!

I would also like to make a special note about the house wine – I’m not a huge wine fan and I loved this one!!

Service

The staff at Spice Theory were extremely welcoming.  The floor manager in particular (I’m sorry his name has escaped me! ), was wonderful, if not one of the best floor managers I’ve come across.  He instinctively knew the delicate balance between being attentive without being too attentive.  He was extremely friendly, polite and provided excellent service.  He knew who I was straight away when he welcomed me in to the restaurant and was really passionate about educating me on the menu and the restaurant.  For this alone I would have rated the service 5/5 stars!

However…

One thing that made the night a little uncomfortable for me was that one member of staff asked multiple times about whether I would be writing a review, where I would post the review and if it would be published in the Newspaper as well. Asking multiple times throughout my dinner left me feeling like the experience became less about showcasing what the restaurant had to offer and more about what I would be writing in my review.

When invited as a guest, the best experiences are when the chefs and staff can’t wait to talk about how they came up with the idea for a particular dish and their mind is on their food and service so much that they completely forget about me writing a review.

As a suggestion, the PR agency should inform the restaurant who is coming, the style of reviews they write – for example I’ve never written for a newspaper – and also what they can expect from the blogger prior to their arrival.  This will mean the restaurant can focus on their service and the passion behind their menu, which is what I really want to see!

VALUE FOR MONEY

Spice Theory is excellent value for money.  The prices are really reasonable and the food is delicious overall.  I would visit again!
