WHATIWEAR Sydney Fashion Blogger Meet!

Last Saturday was a pretty special day for us at The Hidden Thimble. We only started blogging last October meeting this awesome community that is the blogging sphere and figuring out what the hell fashion “is,” or for that matter what it “can” be, and now, we had the privilege to be a part of a selected few to attend an event for Sydney fashion blogger organised by the lovely people at WhatIWear!

The meeting place was at the recently new Guylian Dessert Café in Darling Harbour. New friends? New dessert place? TOO FREAKN AWESOME!! Unfortunately, Talyssa couldn’t make it to the event (and she really really wanted to be a part of it!). So that left me by myself…alone…GAHH! I’m a recovering introvert yeah! But whatever YOLO! HAHA

So what was the WhatIWear event all about? The opportunity not only gave us a chance to meet with the names and faces behind the website and other long lost fashion friends, but as a fashion social website it was great to hear, plan and socialize how WhatIWear could become the right fashion community for all fashion lovers – and we are their pioneers!

It was so much fun to meet all these lovely ladies! Shy nerves aside, everyone was not only stylish but we bonded together quite well. It was so hectic as well. I didn’t even get to meet the other half of the table properly! I can’t wait to meet everyone again (with Talyssa this time around) :)

So, what did I wear? The theme was to reflect the WhatIWear colours: white, black and orange.

With Karen from meandsunny. She’s so sweet and friendly! Her bag on the day was super cute as well!

Romper: Nasty Gal | Knee socks: Sportsgirl | Necklace: House Of Harlow | Earrings: Bagazimuri | Shoes: Dotti

Yeah my wardrobe lacks the orange but I improvised with my makeup and accessories accents :P I was so happy to have so many compliments on my drip paint/gloomy bear nail art! It was my first time to do them. Also my Farris wheel ring got its fair share of attention lol

The stylish Cassie from Cee Me More. The story behind the name I thought was sweet and funny since it’s something I can relate too ;)

Now it’s time to meet the awesome team!

L TO R: Margaret from La Petite Mademoiselle,  PixelHazard from Bright Green Laces, Cassie from Cee Me More,  Rachel from Rachel Bambi,  Jessica from Mind Body Shop, Valencia (event organiser) from WhatIWear, Camille from Frilly Skirts, Karen from meandsunny and Ethel from Fashiondiction.

A big thank you to Valencia, the Community Manager of WhatIWear! She came straight from the airport to do the event! Much love! <3
Working like a BOSS
Actually this is what work looked like most the time lol

Working hard!
Follow us! lol
Funny as hell Ethel from Fashiondiction. Love her muchos!
I love this shot even though it’s blurry :) Sorry Karen!! ><

All our thoughts and ideas for the WhatIWear community to be the ideal fashion social space!

Spoils of the day! All the polaroids I stole got :)

I know things will get better and better as we develop our connection to the WhatIWear community and with all the beautiful faces and personalities that made us all pioneers to begin with!  I can’t wait to show everyone what we can do!!

Now, The Hidden Thimble has a WIW account! Follow us here. We’ll be updating our WIW page soon! :D

FML: This Shirt Has Cats!

If you don’t know who this little kitty is, well I’m gonna educate you on the awesomeness of this shirt because… it has freakin Chococat on it! Choco-freakn-cat!!

Yeah, possibly the cutest thing to have on a blouse. I got this Forever21 baby from my great friend as a Christmas present when she was overseas. She was still thinking of me when she was visiting long time friends, how sweet! So I’ll call her “Beloved M” here. She looks after me and my fashion endeavors, heart her long time~.

Rings – HOH | ASOS | Lovisa

Cuteness overload! This is from the HELLO KITTY FOREVER, FOREVER 21 X SANRIO Collection 2012. The items were really cute! I love the way they styled the pattern-on-pattern graphics for the photo shoot in the collection. It doesn’t look “kiddish.” The looks they portrayed were fresh and youthful for the pleasure of street style.  So unique! I wish Australia had F21 so I could buy more pieces :(

Cute right?! Click on the image to see more photos!
Pleather Skater Skirt – ASOS | Blouse – F21 | Shoes – hand me down

So I guess my take is more of a toned down version aww :(  To toughen the look, I paired the blouse with my pleather skirt which gave it a nice contrast. The skirt is the wet-look kind of pleather skater skirts available which I love because it’s so sleek.

Cute oxford-esque heels in cream and brown to match. These types of shoe designs were popular in Japan once upon a time… still is for some brands like Liz Lisa :)

The forced “I’m-not-looking-at-you-to-look-natural-but-it’s-all-lies” look to finish LOL :P

FML – Floral BDGeans

First off, HAPPY NEW YEAR everyone!! Talyssa and I wish you all the best and thank you for supporting us with all your lovely comments, following and visits! 2012 has certainly gone fast hasn’t it? It definitely has been an accelerated learning curb for us with our blog and we predict 2013 is gonna be the year for more fun and games here at The Hidden Thimble for sure!

And starting off for 1st Jan ’13, we are back for another flower power hit!

Ah, you’re probably going, “Huhhh??” A bit surprised it’s not a New Year’s Eve party edition right? Well, NYE was a bit low key this year for us. We just went out to a friend’s place and partied with eating, gaming and singing then went to watch the fireworks at 12AM. So yeah, fashion-wise we weren’t in the mood lol

This look is a bit more for your casual day out though, with the location setting it seems to really fit into the country theme lol. It must be the hat! I don’t think I really see people wear hats in the city except for guys with caps. Actually I don’t really wear hats! Especially of this size! But I think it looks great when you pair it with a maxi dress for the summer.

Talyssa keeps on commenting how Japanese I looked with my hat and wig. Actually, there is something Gyaru about this look. My mission is complete lol

Blouse: Zara. Jeans: BDG. Hat: ThreadSence. Necklace: House of Harlow. Boots: Overseas (Korea).

Ahh these BDG jeans are love! I got them online at Urban Outfitters and they are just the perfect shade in colour. Oooh secret! I only started wearing jeans again this year after a veryyy long hiatus. Long as in maybe 2 years+(?) Yeah, it’s been a while since I covered my legs (hahz!) It’s such a pain to alter something you already paid for and seeing all that fabric go in the bin is heartbreaking (for my ego…).

Ah Nicole if you are reading this (which I doubt *sad*), you own my soul with your amazing jewelry!  These are from her first season range. Still classics. ;)

OK that’s it!

FML – Fashion Monthly Look – IU style #2

Apologies for the late FML, however we have decided to stretch our Korea shenanigans over two months…because there was just way too much Korean goodness to fit into once month only!  So we decided we’d share as much knowledge with you as we could and spread it over 2 months.

Talyssa’s style

My second IU look is much the same as the first with my blouse and skirt being the same. I instead paired it with a burnt orange jumper and added a black neck tie to give it an extra preppy look.
I kept my socks and shoes very plain in this look – almost school-like
Close up detailing of collar, jumper and neck tie. I absolutely love the colour scheme!!
Please ignore the lack of socks…Here you can see the panel-knit detailing of the jumper. I love jumpers with unique knitted patterns! It is something I always look out for when buying a jumper.
Once again hair and makeup is kept simple. When it comes to curls for an IU look I think it’s important to have them looking a little bit more natural/messy rather than perfectly tight curls.

 Siree’s style

Colour faux pas would definitely be green+red. At first, I didn’t know if the combo of mint green and pink would work but I was pleasantly surprised!

Mint green being one of the many colours for this season, this peter pan collar also is a reverse shirt with a button down design at the back. This time around, I broke the flowy nature of the skort and loose bagginess of the shirt with a structured black blazer to neutralize the palette from being overwhelming.

Mint Green Top – Forecast. Blazer – Dotori. Skort – Dazzlin’. Boots – Yesstyle.
IU has either sheer white or opaque white sockings paired with some of her performing outfits. The design on mine are almost like a garter at the top with a faux sock line at the bottom which I thought was unique. Stockings with different stitch patterns are great to play around with for new outfit combos.
Painted my nails with a glitter french tip. I love the colour tangerine since it goes very well with my skin colour.
Hair close-up time! I took a classic old-school vintage hairstyle but made it a bit casual… since I just came from work lol.

Stay tuned for our final look for FML – IU month!

FML – Fashion Monthly Look: IU

It’s our first fashion post. Huzzah!  Oh, but this is not your ordinary OOTD type of entry…Let us introduce our new project: “Fashion Monthly Look”, or better known as FML.

FML will be a monthly feature where all dedicated posts will explore a fashion look from head to toe.  These monthly looks will vary from everyday clothing styles, to themes in movies and TV shows, to high couture inspired looks.  Our posts will revolve around teaching you the different ways to explore, recreate and achieve the style of the month, and overtime will hopefully provide you with an extensive database of bright ideas for style, nail, hair, make up and even DIY tutorials.

So, if you like eye candy here’s a sweet treat, our first FML inspired by IU’s “YOU+I.”

If we could describe the overall theme of IU’s look, it would be a mix of ‘modern vintage’, with ‘preppy cute’ creating a highly feminine look.

1. Romwe ripple knit Jumper 2. Romwe navy cardigan 3. Marc Jacobs cotton poplin shirt
4. Asos lace socks 5.Yesstyle mary jane pumps 6. Top Shop beaded collar 7. Yesstyle A-line skirt

Notable items include:

  • Collared blouse: Peter Pan collars, two-tone double collared blouses, lace and so on.
  • Cardigans: Cute buttons add extra detail for this look.
  • Baggy/loose jumpers.
  • Skirts, Skorts, shorts:  Short length and pleated are great for this look.
  • Mary Janes or other buckled shoes.
  • Colours:  For a more winter and traditional IU look think: mustards, emerald greens, navy blues, burnt orange, creams and reds.  For a more spring/summer look think: salmon pinks, navys, mint greens, creams, summer pastels and so on.

Please note this is not a “How to look exactly like IU look,” this is a guide to create an IU inspired look.

For this IU inspired look I have paired a loose mustard jumper over a Peter Pan collared blouse, with a silk pleated mini skort. The little details in this outfit make all the difference in achieving that preppy feminine vintage look.

Tips:

  • When wearing jumper on top of a collared blouse, wear the collar over the top, for extra contrast and added texture to your outfit.
  • Colour matching also gives a very vintage preppy vibe and always reminds me of that 60s matching “coat dress” fashion.  Here I have matched my mustard jumper with my Mary Jane mustard platform shoes.
  • When wearing a short skirt and high shoes, I think it always looks super cute to dress up your legs with some socks.  I am absolutely obsessed with wearing frill socks with my shoes and I think this looks suits IU’s style perfectly!  REMEMBER: Always keep the socks pulled up, not folded!!
I bought this jumper because I loved the knitted detailing on it! It makes the piece so much more unique.
This jumper also has lace detailing along the rim, adding extra femininity and a vintage flare.
Isn’t the collar of my Peter Pan blouse completely unique?? I love the lace overlaid on the main collar part and the netted lace trim. It’s so simple but subtly adds something unique and special to the outfit.
To complete this look, I wore my hair in wavy pigtails and tried an IU inspired makeup look. IU is known for her large droopy puppy eyes so I tried to achieve this by extending my lash line…I personally think this looks a bit weird on me…What do you think?
Argh! I hate how my hands look so derpy here!! What happened?!
But this was the best shot of my Peter Pan collared nails and cute vintage bag ($10 from Insadong, South Korea! Hell yeah!) The nail tutorial will be coming later this month! Although you can’t see it here, the white nail design looks awesome, I wish I did them all that way!
For my coordinate, I paired this double collared blouse with these navy waist high shorts to repeat the navy undertone of the collar. I finished off with a pair of dark grey thigh high socks and suede brown wedges to neutralize the collar palette. It has that kind of school girl meets sailor vibe which I thought was cute.
Tips:
  • The subtle detailing in blouses can make the shirt turn from something that is a basic item to a delicate piece in your vintage wardrobe. Things like the buttons or cut of the collar can change up the look in a subtle and the silhouette is timeless, so investing in interesting blouse styles can live up a look if you’re feeling you need a bit more eye candy in your outfit.
  • Using belts to cinch in your waistline is a great way to give shape to your silhouette. As some vintage styles can hide the waistline to be more dainty than sexy for the body, you might feel somewhat shapeless. Here, I used my belt from my waist shorts to tie it into a bow to add more texture to the bottom as well as making the bottom “puff” more to give a slight bell shape at the ruffles.
These cute small gold buttons are adorable!
Unfortunately my makeup didn’t show enough. Boo~ I recently got a blunt fringe cut which I have always wanted to do but was afraid to ever try. I’ve seen pictures of celebrities who pull off this lolita look and it suits them so well, and at last I took the chance. I really liked it!
I love this bag! Just as Talyssa’s we both bought it at the same shop. This one was the last of it’s kind so I nabbed it. Teehee. The briefcase look was so adorable it definitely finishes the look of that old school, school prep.
